Shirak region is situated in the northwest of Armenia. It is the country’s poorest region with the highest level of unemployment. Considerable parts of the population are socially vulnerable families, who struggle to gain access to basic needs such as affordable heating, hot and/or drinking water. Even communal buildings like schools or kindergartens often lack a continuous supply of hot water and heating, which raises sanitary and health issues. Awareness on green energy is very low and also the knowledge of how it could help tackle socio-economic problems is missing among local authorities, CSOs and regular citizens.
The project aims at creating accessible and practical conditions for sustainable development based on renewable energy, and thus, directly contributes to poverty alleviation in Shirak region. Renewable energy facilities (e.g. solar irrigation, biogas systems, water distillation using solar energy) are promoted for public and private use, as well as green facilities which generate income (e.g. green house combined with air heaters to allow for extended harvesting seasons). Additionally, local authorities and other stakeholders are informed on low-carbon technologies in order to embed the experience on an operational and policy level.
History of “Armenian Green Technologies CenteR”
“Armenian Green Technologies Center” Foundation was founded in May 2015 and officially registered on 11 March 2016. “Armenian Green Technologies Center” Foundation was founded by Gevorg Petrosyan, Arsen Karapetyan and Khachik Sahakian who are experienced experts and NGO leaders in RE & EE sector.
The foundation is young in Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency industry of the Republic of Armenia(RA), but in spite of this it has an experienced staff, which already has its’ substantial contribution to the dissemination of information about Green Technologies, Renewable Energy, Energy Efficiency, as well as investment in environmental ideas and distribution of the information, researching, education, trainings of specialists and in green technologies of the country.

Board of Trustees is the supreme body of the Fund, which cares about Strategic management, based on the accepted vision, value system and principles, for achieving of defined goals.
Armenia is one of countries that does not have carbon energy resources (oil, gas), but due to its geographic position and natural climatic conditions, it is reach of RES resources, especially solar energy. Taking into account of this fact the “Armenian Green Technologies Center” Foundation has evolved its activities all over the whole territory of the RA, especially in Shirak Marz and the surrounding regions. The reason is that from all regions of Armenia, Shirak and Gegharkunik regions are ones, which have their unique place in terms of using effectively solar energy.
The Foundation carries out any economic activity specified in its charter, which is not prohibited by law. It is also engaged in entrepreneurial activity, but all revenues should be directed to the “Armenian Green Technologies Center” Foundation’s goals.
It is well-known that, in Armenia there has been developed the national energy saving program and put into circulation a legislative initiative for creating a favorable environment for RE & EE sector. But today, the legislative regulatory frameworks of Armenia, as well as, the investment climate of the country, are not quite favorable for the development and progress of RE & EE sector. At the same time the most important global environmental challenges facing our planet (Armenia is in the highest point of these challenges) lie in the development of renewable energy.
In this context, the “Armenian Green Technologies Center” Foundation accepted the “environmental challenge” and in a short period of time conducted and currently continues to conduct projects, that are aimed at not only on introduction and dissemination of Renewable Energy Resources and Energy Efficiency measures in the RA, but also a mitigation of environmental and social issues and the dissemination of innovative ideas and information.
